I am not a Bollywood fan. In fact I usually avoid watching Indian movies like the plague, but an insistent friend convinced me to watch ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’ and to my surprise – I loved it!

This light-hearted romantic comedy follows the rebellious lead Bitti (played by Kriti Sanon) who is on a journey to find her true love – a male author who has written a character so similar to her that she feels he must be the one for her. She’s a classic manic pixie dream girl on an adventure filled with potential danger and lots of laughs.

Her boy-next-door Chirag harbors a torch for her and we see him maneuver the situation to eliminate his ‘competition’ only to discover that Bitti’s obsession with the perfect man may have been misplaced.

Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, the family film manages to avoid OTT typical masala style jokes that we have come to expect from Bollywood and manages to be a pleasant watch despite it’s slightly predictable plot.  The highlight of the film is that it sticks to reality. Shot in a North Indian town, in a regular home there are no grand sets or unnecessarily lavish routines to break the narrative.
