Born on March 29th, 1939, Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, known as his stage name, 'Jagdeep' acted in over 400 films. New-generation Bollywood buffs remmember him as Salman Khan’s father in Rajkumar Santoshi’s 'Andaaz Apna Apna'.
The actor was fondly known for his portrayal of 'Soorma Bhopali' opposite Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra in Ramesh Sippy's hit film 'Sholay'. Jagdeep's most known era in film began with GP Sippy's film Brahmachari (1968), starring Shammi Kapoor. His role in the film was widely appreciated for its nuanced comical element. Throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s he became a recognised figure and familiar face in the world of Bollywood Cinema, especially for his comical roles/performances.
He is survived by his sons, Jaaved Jafri and Naved Jafri, who were present at the funeral held at Iranian Shia Isna cemetery at Mazgaon, Mumbai. Prominent Bollywood actors attended the funeral as well, including Johnny Lever.
'Our father gave 70 years to the film industry, he received a lot of love from the industry.' Javed, who has also made his mark in Bollywood, said at the funeral while thanking those who came to pay their respects.
Bollywood mourned the loss of the veteran comedian who won hearts across the nation with his versatile and uplifting roles.
