Sajal Ali is starring in British film “What’s Love Got To Do With It”. The film is written by none other than Jemima Goldsmith or Jemima Khan, as Pakistan prefers to remember her.
The two leading ladies seem to be bonding well on set as both shared pictures on their Instagram accounts. Emma Thompson, Lily James and Shabana Azmi are also part of the cast.
What’s Love Got To Do With It is Jemima’s first film as a producer under her production house Instinct Productions. The announcement came in November 2020. Jemima was the producer of the 2019 Emmy-nominated docuseries The Case Against Adnan Syed for HBO and the award-winning docuseries The Clinton Affair for A&E Networks, which aired on Sky Atlantic in 2018.
The film is directed by a giant of the global film industry, Shekhar Kapur. Speaking to Variety last year, he said “It’s about cultural clashes and it’s a comedy, but it’s about hiding behind an identity and how identities can become tribal, and how tribalism can lead to clashes and fundamentalism. It’s a rom-com, but based on this fundamental idea of people adopting identities out of fear of marginalisation.”
We do get a little whiff of the classic British-Asian storyline of ‘East is East’ from the entire premise.
