Golmaal Again: The formula for success
Rohit Shetty is the only filmmaker who earns more and more revenue with every passing sequel.
Unlike Secret Superstar, Diwali release Golmaal Again was targeted towards raking in box office returns – and it certainly was successful. Audience came out in huge numbers to watch this slapstick comedy with an all star caste. The overseas collections too have been impressive and the film has gone on to become the highest grosser of the year.
According to film trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film’s domestic collections are currently at Rs 184.97 cr
Golmaal Again marks Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty’s tenth cinematic venture together. Delving in to horror comedy-drama the film ticked all the right boxes for Bollywood masala fun. The fourth installment of the Golmaal franchise released worldwide on October 20th, just a day after Aamir Khan’s Secret Superstar. Although the family drama gave Golmaal Again some tough time initially, it faded out towards the end, leaving space for the spooky comedy to shine.
In the film we see the origin of Madhav-Gopal and gang as they meet at an orphanage and come together again as adults once they learn that their former caretaker has passed on. The narrative swerves from nostalgia, emotional bonding to sheer lunacy. Elements of supernatural, led by Tabu as Anna the librarian are the highlight of the film.
The antics of five buffoons and their attempts to connect with their past is chock full of hilarious one liners and comic detours (perhaps too many) but nobody expects logic in a Rohit Shetty film.
Ajay Devgan continues his role as Gopaal. His entry has become a signature entry in the Golmaal franchise (this one is inspired from his debut film Phool aur Kaante). Johnny Lever and Shreyas Talpade steal every scene they are in.
Dialogues are witty and will be enjoyed by Bollywood freaks, as they are reused from classic films and weaved very smartly. Farhad Sajid did amazing work here.
The music of Golmaal Again is unmemorable except two reprised songs which have been brutally reworked: Neend Churayee Meri and Aaty Jaatay.
