Best Romance Novels Of All Time
In this month which celebrates love, we thought, why not read about the greatest love stories of all time, too?
Here are our favourite picks:
Pride & Prejudice
Arguably the one to start the trend of all things romantic - from the chase, to the attitude, to finally giving into your ego. Pride & Prejudice circles around courtship amidst class differences, ball gowns, dancing, manners and - undeniable chemistry!
Love Letters Of Great Men
This book was made famous in the infamous scene in Sex & The City where Carrie And Big read a few lines from one of the letters. The book that was in the movie does not exist, but this edition has the letters from the movie, plus MANY more. Furthermore, this is the only edition that contains the Beethoven letter in its original language as read in the movie, not modernized. Our favourite line from one them, "ever thine, ever mine, ever ours..."
To All The Boys I've Loved Before
Han was inspired to write the book based on her own habit of writing long letters to boys she had crushes on as a teenager which is what the heroine of the novel also does. The letters are met with reactions once accidentally posted to the boys - and thus unravels a journey of passion, comedy and young adult romance!
Whitney My Love
After being bargained away by her bankrupt father to the handsome, arrogant Duke of Claymore. Even as his smoldering passion seduces her into a gathering storm of desire, Whitney is adamant not to relinquish her dream of perfect love.
Nuskha Haye Wafa
Of course we added a Pakistani book in the mix. This is one we grew up seeing on our mothers' bookshelf and rightfully so. This is a collection of ghazals and poems by writer Faiz Ahmad Faiz, one of the greatest revolutionary poets of Pakistan - being a revolutionary his sense of romance, where is love, longing, emotions, all connected with both a political and personal mood. Our favourite from this book: Is qadr piyaar sey, eh, jan e jahan rakha hai/Dil ke rukhsaar par is wakht teri yad nay hath.Yun guma ho tha hai garchey hai abhi subhay firaq/Dhal, gaya hijr ka din ah bhi gayee wasal ki raat.(“With such love, oh beloved, at this time, the memory of you has placed its hand on my heart’s visage/ A sensation, still, though now it is the morning of separation, set the day of exile, arrived reunion’s night.”)
