The Ordinary - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
The Ordinary’s no-fuss, minimalistic skincare line has completely altered the way most of us think about our skincare routines. The brand adopts a very ingredient-oriented approach and is completely transparent with the active ingredients they use.
While this scientific approach to skincare is refreshing, some active ingredients in high concentrations can trigger adverse effects. Let's take a closer look at their best and worst products.
The Good:Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Serum:This serum works like magic for oily and acne-prone skin. Zinc reduces the redness and inflammation in acne-prone skin, while Niacinamide tackles melanin production. Melanin is what gives our skin its colour, and when we get acne or pimples excess melanin production can lead to hyperpigmentation. So if you’re struggling to tackle the aftermath of acne or an irritating break out, invest in this serum!
The Good: AHA 30%+ BHA 2% serumThis serum is rich in salicylic acid, glycolic acid and lactic acid. Its bright red colour has led skin care gurus to refer to it as the “Vampire Facial”. This serum really is like a 10 minute at-home facial, and the active ingredients work to bulldoze dead skin cells, giving your skin a refreshed, dewy glow.
The Bad:Squalene Cleanser:
This cleanser is the brand’s only cleanser in its entire line. While this has been marketed as a moisturising and protecting cleanser for dry skin, reviews reveal that the cleanser is average at best. This cleanser simply does not cleanse the skin deeply enough, and does not reduce the appearance of large pores either!
The Ugly:Glycolic acid toning solution:
This toner is problematic in so many ways. The high concentration of glycolic acid coupled with the use of fragrant components means that this irritates and burns sensitive skin. Glycolic acid is a powerful chemical exfoliant, but to put its potency into perspective: our skin has a natural PH of 5 but this strong toner has the low PHof 3.5. If your skin is acne-prone or sensitive chances are this toner will cause irritation, inflammation, and burning!
