Celebrity Guide: How to respond to internet trolls

Take note from the celebrities on how to respond to haters!

Edition Pakistan · 25 June 2018

With the social media age trudging on with full force, one of the many things we can’t escape is the internet trolling. At some point or the other, everyone encounters faceless internet trolls who ridicule us for having a different opinion, a certain picture or sometimes for no reason at all. While anyone with an internet profile is likely to face this, no one has it worse than our celebrities.

Being a celebrity has never been easy but being a celebrity on social media is a completely different ball game. People feel like they have the power to leave a comment on everything a celebrity does; no matter how unnecessary, mean or provocative that comment may be. Some celebrities take it in humour and some choose to ignore it, we can’t say which is the best approach, but here are a few examples in case you’re deciding on how to respond to your troll!

The hit them back approach

When Nadia Hussain put up a picture of her children on Eid and someone posted a nasty comment, she decided this was something she simply would not let go of. So she went all out, responding to most people who had commented, calling them all the crude terms that had been used for her. Many have applauded her for setting people straight, while others have accused her of going too far.

The name and shame

Model Zara Peerzada takes no fear in naming and shaming those who cross the line. She recently posted screenshots of an account that was sending her messages for solicitation. We’re sure this shuts up people!

With a cheeky twist

Osman Khalid Butt’s famed comeback to trolls bashing Mahira Khan, when her pictures with Ranbir Kapoor went viral, was one of the best of its kind! Take note people.

Take the high road

Starlet Sonya Hussyn has been in the limelight recently, which means she’s also getting her fair share of trolling. However, she has maintained herself as being above the trolls and chosen to reply with grace!

Seldomly but surely

Mahira Khan too chose to say quiet when she was trolled mercilessly for her pictures with Ranbir Kapoor. But when someone posted a crass comment on her picture with her son, even she did not let it go, and rightly so!
